Cold Leads – It’s All About the Numbers!

Cold leads are people who have not expressed any kind of interest in you or your product and/or business opportunity. Warm leads are those who already have some kind of relationship with you or your business. Qualified leads have expressed a specific need for your product.

There is a huge difference in the level of difficulty when dealing with the various types of leads. Most people begin with their warm market. This includes friends, family, and former customers who may be approachable with a new product or opportunity. You can turn your warm leads into cold leads if you push too hard.

Once you have used up your warm market, your mlm will send you out to find more people. Going out and "getting names" is the epitome of hunting for cold leads. And the word “hunting” is very appropriate.

There you are, in the grocery store, and a woman with two children walks by. You freeze. She moves on to another aisle while you are still working up your nerve to approach her. You start to go after her, then hesitate. You peek around the end of the aisle. Yes! She’s still there!

Stealthily, you ease around the corner and enter the aisle where her children are fighting over who gets to ride on the shopping cart. Finally, you sidle up next to her and study the row of cereal boxes. She smiles at you. You comment on the cold weather and she confides she sent her child to school without a jacket that morning. You don’t want to spook her now – she might make a run for it. Even with the children, she’ll be faster than you because you are weighted down with your hunting equipment – your business card wallet, date book and sack of brochures.

She’s finished now and she starts to move away from you. You spring in front of her, blocking her path. “Say!” you blurt. “I just have to give you my business card.” You shove it into her hand as her eyes dart frantically about trying to find a way around you. “I need you to come to my meeting tonight…you’d be perfect… it’s just around the corner…give me your number and I’ll put you down for eight o’clock.” She spits out a phone number as she is pushing her children to the next aisle. She’s even left her shopping basket behind. When you get home that night, you call the number she gave you. Turns out it’s no longer in service. There will be no trophy on your wall tonight. But you’ll be talking about the one that got away when you go to your meeting.

This is when your upline will nod sagely and reassure you that this was not your fault. It was the woman’s fault. There are just people who do not recognize a golden opportunity when it is offered to them at the end of a long day, with two rambunctious children who are hungry for dinner. “It’s all about the numbers.” they tell you. If you don’t have people coming to the meetings, it’s simply a matter of approaching more people. With that, they turn you around and gently nudge you to the door whispering encouragingly, “Just work the numbers!”

This is story is not made up and not uncommon when dealing with cold leads. This particular story happened to me. If more numbers were needed, more numbers I’d get!

I stayed out each day until I had ten new names. Sometimes this would take an hour, sometimes four hours. When I had gotten 365 names, I looked to see how many I had actually booked for a meeting. It came to a grand total of 40 people! Out of that 40, five of them signed up to be team members. I had five more team members that came out of my warm market. I made three sales as a follow-up to the initial meeting. Hmmmm...not much payback for all the time and effort I had put into it.

I had to admit, it really was about the numbers! And my numbers were showing me that cold leads were not for me! Attraction Marketing changed the way I do business and it’s far more comfortable for both me and my customers.
