Your Home Business Opportunity: 10 Things to Help You Choose
Signing up for a home business opportunity requires careful consideration. There is no shortage of businesses from which to choose. Here are some things to consider before making up your mind.
1. Check out the company. Is it reputable? How long has it been around? Many new companies fold due to the intense competition.
If the home business opportunity you are considering is fairly new, simply protect yourself by not making it your sole source of income or over stocking inventory. In addition, find out if product can be obtained directly from the company, or only through its distributors. You don’t want to compete with headquarters for customers!
2. What is the startup fee and is it within your initial budget?
A home business opportunity can cost anywhere from $50 to $3000 to buy in to. Please think long and hard before putting up a substantial amount of money either for the buy in or for the initial inventory order until you are sure that this is the right home business opportunity for you!
3. What kind of quota is required? Some companies insist that you purchase a certain amount monthly in order to remain active. You wouldn’t be the first person to buy inventory you don’t need just to meet a quota to qualify for the next level up the ladder. Don’t fall in to this trap. Do make sure the quota is reasonable and find out what the consequences are if that quota is not met.
4. Check out the compensation plan. How many levels does it go? Your commission on your personal recruits will be paid at a particular rate or percentage. What about the recruits of your recruits? And the next level down? Is the compensatory amount worth the effort that would go in to building your team or making the sale?
5. Is it actually a home business opportunity? Will you be able to conduct all of your business from home, or will you be required to attend a lot of meetings and seminars?
6. What kind of training is offered and what does it cost? My first MLM offered training three to four times a week for $7 and various conferences and seminars ranging from $50 to $175. My current business opportunity offers free training.
7. Do you like your potential upline? As you are brought in to a company, you are usually tied to the person who signed you. If you find this person is not an effective leader or wants to interfere in the way you have chosen to run your business, you are stuck.
You may have to be inactive in your business for six months to a year before you can sign up under someone else. For a personal story on how my upline turned me off my first business, visit my blog at Home Business Diary and look at the article "Choose Your Upline Carefully."
8. Does the product lend itself to repeat business like vitamins or will the customer have it for a while like kitchen gadgets?
9. Is the product a hard goods item which you will have to store in your home? Can it be shipped directly to the customer from the factory? Perhaps you have a home business opportunity which does not require the handling of product at all such as selling e-books, or affiliate marketing.
10. What kind of marketing restrictions are there? Most mlms do not allow their distributors to promote their products online. If they are allowed to advertise, they must use company-approved copy only. This makes sense.
A distributor might accidentally make an exaggerated or false claim about the product and with so many distributors involved, no company is going to be able to monitor them all.
Still, if you are thinking of a business opportunity with a MLM, you need to consider how this may affect your ability to advertise. Don't depend on your mlm website to do your advertising for you; it won't!
Even if you are building an independent business, many of these things are worth thinking about ahead of time. The person who signs with an mlm can switch companies if they are not happy. If you are building your own business, mistakes in the planning stages can be much more costly.
